Bronze Beetle Nut Lime Holder

900. Description: Antique Afghanistan Bronze Beetle Nut Lime Holder, Ca late 1800's-Early 1900's. This antique bronze container was probably used for keeping lime, which was added to betel nut and spices, then chewed, providing a mild intoxication. This was a popular habit throughout much of Asia as well as the parts of the Middle East and remains so today in many places. This piece was probably from Afghanistan or India. The original chain and spatula used to scrape out the slaked lime used in the pan (betel nut mix) is missing from this unit.

Complex decoration on both sides of the container. The workmanship is detailed. The surface is now worn smooth in places from handling over a long period of time.

Condition: The patina is lovely and there is no damage to the container, only natural wear.

Dimensions: Height: 2.75 inches, Diameter: 3 inches
Material: bronze

Provenance: Nagaland, NE India, Period: 19th Century. Acquired as a wedding gift by an English man and his Naga Wife.
